DESIGN FOR INNOVATION
Design Thinking is a mindset and process that unlocks innovation. It is a valuable hands-on business tool that allows for creativity to flourish. I not only use design thinking in my daily design practice, but I also run workshops that guide teams to create innovative design solutions.
the double diamond approach
Double Diamond is the name of a design process model. The main feature of the Double Diamond is its emphasis on “divergent” and “convergent thinking”. Firstly, many ideas are created, before refining and narrowing down to the best idea. This happens twice in the model—once to confirm the problem definition and once to create the solution.

BE-design uses the Double Diamond model to understand clients and their problems by exploring creative and innovative ways to solve these problems.
There are four phases to this approach:
- Discover customer problems
- Define specific customer problems
- Develop potential solutions to these customer problems
- Deliver feasible and viable solutions to these customer problems
DISCOVER
Discover is taking a deep dive into the problem we are working together to solve. This deep dive allows us to get insight into the problem.
DEFINE
Evaluate and synthesise the information into a problem definition. Choosing the area to focus on.
DEVELOP
Think up potential solutions to the problem. “Iterate, Iterate, Iterate”.
DELIVER
Choose the best solution and build on that. Find a solution that will work!

DOUBLE DIAMOND DESIGN PROCESS
There has been a massive paradigm shift in the way we live and work in recent years. This has been escalated by global cultural events such as the Movement of manufacturing offshore, the Global financial crisis and now - the Global pandemic.
Understanding people and cultural shifts, and having wisdom, coupled with flexibility in approach is vital in navigating change. Deciding when and how to pivot to charter a new direction requires an adaptive yet structured approach. Design Thinking and the Double Diamond model are strategic approaches that allow businesses to remain abreast of the challenges our rapidly changing world throws at us.
Innovation, Creativity, Agility and Lean start-up practices are now highly valued skills in most industries. Design Thinking and the Double Diamond model were developed by closely observing the way designers produced commercially viable, targeted, tangible outcomes despite limited budgets, complexity and rapid change. What was once perceived as chaotic, artistic processes, were analysed and mapped. The result was a strategic methodology that helped businesses foster innovation and navigate change.
I not only apply Design Thinking and the Double Diamond model in my design practice, but I have also run workshops for industry and taught it at University in an array of courses.
