R18 Closed Room Reveal

Project Overview

To celebrate the highly anticipated Australian arrival of the first-ever R18 production bike, BMW Motorrad required an exclusive, high-impact preview experience for a select audience of motorcycle enthusiasts, VIPs, and media. Operating under strict embargo, the “Closed Room” roadshow travelled across Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, offering an intimate, first-look encounter with the brand’s historic foray into the heavyweight cruiser segment.

As the Assistant Creative Director at KOJO, I developed the concept and spearheaded the creative team tasked with designing, scripting, and executing the spatial narrative and multi-sensory reveal that introduced this monumental machine to the Australian market.

The Creative Concept_

 ‘Icons Never Die’

The BMW R18 is not just a new motorcycle; it is a physical bridge to the 1923 R32 and a testament to pure mechanical engineering. Our core creative vehicle, ‘Icons Never Die’, was designed to honor this heritage. We avoided traditional, passive vehicle unveils in favor of an evocative, multi-sensory journey that placed the audience “on the ride” before the engine ever fired up.

The strategy was simple yet challenging: take attendees on an emotional journey through BMW’s storied history, transition through the technical anatomy of the “Big Boxer” engine, and culminate in a high-octane visual reveal—all while the physical bike remained entirely stationary in the center of a dark room.

To achieve an immersive 4D environment, we treated the pre-production R18 as a canvas, leveraging advanced projection mapping, tailored spatial audio, and architectural lighting to build a continuous loop of tension and release.

Phase 1

HISTORICAL LINEAGE

A Journey Across Time. The experience commenced in total darkness. As an evocative voiceover chronicled BMW Motorrad’s near-century of heritage, minimalist projection mapping traced the iconic white double-pinstriping and teardrop fuel tank geometries of historic models directly onto the dark silhouette of the bike.

Phase 2

TECHNICAL X-RAY & CONSTRUCTION

Engineering Brought to Light. Transitioning from heritage to modern capability, the projection content evolved into a dynamic, blueprint-style “X-ray.” The visuals mapped out the inner workings of the new 1,802cc “Big Boxer” engine, the open nickel-plated drive shaft, and the classic double-cradle frame, showing the bike being built layer by layer via light.

Phase 3

THE CLIMAX & REVEAL

The Multi-Sensory Symphony.Synchronised with a crescendo of surround-sound audio that mimicked the thunderous rumble of the engine, the projection exploded into a high-octane sequence of motion, dust, and open-road visuals. This sequence broke the boundary between the stationary machine and the landscapes it was built to conquer.

Phase 4

TACTILE INTEGRATION

Up Close and Personal. As the media sequence concluded, the room transitioned into premium studio lighting, flooding the space to reveal the actual physical finish of the R18. The audience was invited forward to touch the chrome, feel the scale of the boxer cylinders, and experience the tactile reality of the machine they had just seen come to life.
